A banking blog, ten dancers from top ballet companies in the Netherlands and England, and the realistic setting of London of today as backdrop proved to be a winning combination. The awarded docu-dance film Voices of Finance is named after and based on the former Guardian's 'banking blog', in which its author, Joris Luyendijk, looked at finance from an anthropological perspective. In a succession of danced monologues, the performers play bankers and others across the financial sector, who speak about their lives and describe a typical working day. Clara van Gool captures the energy of their dance which she expertly blends with spoken text. The result is a singular glimpse into the glamorous and stressful culture of the financial world. Clara van Gool

Clara van Gool (b. 1962 in Amsterdam), graduated from the Dutch Film & Television Academy. She started by working as assistant director and script/continuity for several Dutch tv-drama and feature films. Her first film Reservaat (1988) was nominated Best Short at the Dutch Film Festival 1989 and was the Dutch submission for the Oscars of that year. She continued to develop her own cinematic language in a form that is usually described as ‘dance-film’. She successfully continued to make dance-films, and experimented with different narrative techniques – documentary and fiction. Her work includes dance films One False Move (2011), Coup de grâce (2011), Between 2 Houses (2006), Up at Down (2003, the video adaptation of the stage performance).

Director's statement:
The film Voices of Finance immerses us in the heart of the financial world: the City of London. Dancers using both movement and dance, text and voice-over, embody and articulate the words of various players from the financial sector. These 'portraits' are each based on a monologue and shot on a single realistic location. During 24 hours the 10 solos guide us through the City, building up to a chainreaction within an extremely frantic, competitive, exhausting, insecure, glamorous, and stressful surrounding, where every day can be your last.

The monologues in the film are based on the 'banking blog' Voices of Finance by author and publicist Joris Luyendijk in the English newspaper The Guardian. He focused on the people working in the City of London after the credit crunch and he chose a very concise form: a monologue with an anthropologic perspective. The monologues paint an extraordinary insight in the ‘banking elite’ and these are the inspiration and foundation for a film that expresses an urgent issue in an artistic and stylised form: the anxiety of bankers, their “Angst”, as a perfect matrix for choreography. Instead of analysing the financial markets it shows working days, the ups and downs, the future dreams, the relationships with co-workers, the pressure on workers to excel, the stress and rush that comes with the job, and the always present fear of insecurity.

A cast of top-performers has been selected for the film, coming from Nationaal Ballet and NDT in The Netherlands and Rambert Dance Company in the UK, next to three excellent independent creators and one actor. Together these soloïsts create a broad palette by consciously employing their different styles of contemporary dance as an extra dimension to each portrait, mirroring the position and the excellence of the portrayed Banker.

In the blog the bankers only participated on the condition that they remain anonymous. This film aims to give a face to them, while at the same time keeping them unrecognizable. This way an artistic twist of documentary style convention is the leading cinematographic and choreographic concept throughout the film. I call this film 'docu-dancefilm' as a nod to “docudrama”. Docu, because it is based on true stories. And dance, because this will be the mode of expression.

In my previous work I have always been fascinated by exploring various ways of storytelling by purely visual means. It has been my aim and interest to make dance - apparently such an artificial form - credible in realistic settings. In Voices of Finance it is the first time I also used text. Allowing the energy of movement and dance to express themselves - so as not to run the risk of simply 'playing banker' - I purposely left out too much psychologizing and welcomed moments of absurdity. It's about an intricate interaction between a movement and the spoken word; about contrast, complement, extension or exaggeration.

To me, the filming of dance comes down to trying to catch the energy of movement rather than its aesthetics. This is the very first thing I fell in love with when I started to make films. In my view a cinematographic decoupage contributes to its credibility. It helps the abstract to become narrative. And it is in this way that I wanted Voices of Finance to tells us a classical story in a present time setting: a story about hybris. (Clara van Gool)
