SHADOW OF A CLOUD (30', Romania, 2013)

Screening: Fr, 13 Dec., Elvira Popescu Cinema, 5:30pm

RADU JUDE delivers his usual mix of gritty realism and humorous satire with SHADOW OF A CLOUD, awarded the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Short Film 2013. The story revolves around Father Florescu, as he is summoned to a dying young mother’s bedside to say a last prayer. Going beyond the stereotypes, priesthood is shown at the intersection between clerking and divinity, in the difficult position of delivering miracles to people who only half-heartedly believe. With a narrative that defies classical storytelling, SHADOW OF A CLOUD is a complex film that explores the trials and tribulations of man faced with his own finitude. (Diana Mereoiu, BIEFF 2013)

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT:

SHADOW OF A CLOUD is also a movie about the body, about man’s relation to his own physicality, its impermanence and degradation. The theme of death frequently resurfaced in my life and it coincided with the time when I read the complete works of Chekhov; this theme appears very frequently in his work, but also the character of the priest, met with awkward situations in everyday life. Then there were the phone conversations with Florin Lăzărescu and we came up with the idea of a minister who says a final prayer. After that, we interviewed some clerics and that is how we heard about this situation, more or less as it is shown in the film. It’s a sort of exorcism for me and for Alexandru Dabija, of the fear and obsession with death. It’s constantly on my mind. Camus began The Myth of Sisyphus by saying that deciding whether or not life deserves to be lived is the most important question of all; it’s true, the most important issue is how you relate to death. Depending on how you answer this, you can carry on living, I believe… These past few years I’ve been discovering the silver lining of dying one day, the fact that it gives you a sort of freedom: not to be afraid of everyday things because one day you will die, so then what’s the point in worrying over anxiety, embarrassment, fears, scruples?” (RADU JUDE, Cinemagia interview)
