We live in a historical time that is defined by crisis and uncertainty, in a fragile state of equilibrium that reveals our individual and collective vulnerabilities. Climate change, pandemic, war — events that seemed extraordinary until recently, and that have now become landmarks of our day-to-day lives.
In this context, the topic proposed by the 2022 edition of BIEFF centers on the notion of care as a balm that heals the fractures and ruptures of society and nature, of politics and culture that humanity faces nowadays. Care as a response to concern — care for the other, but also for the self, care for future generations, care for the sum total of beings that are alive. Care as a social value, that has a collective dimension to it, in opposition to the individualistic approach of the hyper-commercial concept of self-care, and considering the historical dynamics of exploitation that lie at the basis of care work.
Handle with care invites us to reflect upon the ways in which we’re living, on the values that govern our communities and societies, but also on the ways in which we may reimagine our surroundings and interactions with those around us in a more sustainable and inclusive manner, with care and respect towards otherness.

Doris Bauer is a co-director of the Vienna Shorts International Film Festival. She studied political science at the University of Vienna and works as a cultural manager and curator. Until 2014 she was director of the open-air summer cinema espressofilm, which she co-founded, and managing director of the DVD rental store Filmgalerie 8½. In 2012, she co-founded the interest group Forum österreichischer Filmfestivals (FÖFF), as whose spokesperson she served until early 2018. Most recently, she was involved in the development of This Is Short, a European streaming platform for short films.
Marian Freistühler is a filmmaker based in Hamburg, Germany. He holds a degree in theatre and media science and studied film at the University of Fine Arts (HFBK) Hamburg, where he also works as a tutor in the department of experimental film. His latest short Islands in the City (2021) was selected in Clermont-Ferrand, Filmfest Dresden and Hofer Filmtage, among others. It got a Special Mention at Tel Aviv ISFF. Marian co-founded the production company Ohne Falsch Film and received the German Short Film Award Lola for producing Alturas (2020). He has been a programmer for the International Competition at Short Film Festival Hamburg since 2020 and is a founding member of the film lab Analogfilmwerke Hamburg.
Andreea Borțun is a Romanian filmmaker and playwright. Her work blends visual poetry and anthropology to explore origins, female point of view and nature. Her recent documentaries embody an intersectional female gaze and give a voice to women from the rural, ethnic Roma or not. The films Andreea wrote or directed were screened at many international film festivals, such as Cannes Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, Toronto or Karlovy Vary. Andreea’s feature debut, Blue Banks, a Romanian-French-Slovenian co-production, is set to start shooting in 2023. Andreea is also the co-founder of Pustnik, an international non-profit screenwriting residency. Starting October 2021, she is a teaching assistant at UNATC Film School, in Bucharest.
Ewa Szablowska is the artistic director of New Horizons International Film Festival in Poland. As an art historian and a curator of moving images, she has been working for festivals and galleries since 2009. At New Horizons International Film Festival, she founded the Visual Front program, a showcase for experimental cinema and films made by visual artists and The Third Eye, a program exploring film and feminism at the different angles. She also curates expanded cinema exhibitions that run with the festival.
Carmen Gray is a freelance arts journalist, film critic and programmer who was born in New Zealand and lives in Berlin. She has written on cinema and other aspects of culture, often focused on Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Caucasus, for The New York Times, The Film Verdict, Criterion, The Guardian, The Observer, Sight & Sound, and ArtReview, among others. She was previously the Film Editor of Dazed & Confused magazine in London. She is part of the selection committees of the Generation section of the Berlin International Film Festival and the Winterthur International Short Film Festival, and is a programme adviser for Open City Docs. She also works as an industry adviser for First Cut Lab.
Ada Solomon is a Romanian film producer, founder of Hi Film Productions and Micro Film. She has produced over 70 films such as: Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (Radu Jude, 2021, Golden Bear Berlin), Aferim! (Radu Jude, 2015, Silver Bear Berlin) and Child’s Pose (Cãlin Peter Netzer, 2013, Golden Bear Berlin). She has worked with prestigious filmmakers such as Ivana Mladenovic, Alexandru Solomon, Răzvan Rădulescu, Federico Bondi, Adriano Valerio and was executive producer for Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann (2016). Ada Solomon is Executive President of EWA Network, Deputy Chairwoman of European Film Academy, Romanian national coordinator of EAVE, ACE Network board member, founding member of the Alliance of Romanian Producers, member of the European Producers Club and winner of EFA European Co production Award – Prix Eurimages.
Calmin Borel has a graduate degree in audio visual production management from the Clermont-Ferrand University. He worked at Videoformes International Festival of Multimedia and Video Art as an organizer from 1999 to 2001. In 2001, he joined the permanent staff of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival where he is part of the international selection committee and coordinates The Lab, the Festival’s competition dedicated to innovation.
Sanne Jehoul is the programme director of Glasgow Short Film Festival, Scotland’s leading short film event, which she has been part of since its 2015 edition. In early 2021 she also joined Vienna-based sales & festival distribution agency Square Eyes, working primarily across their short film slate. She headed up the industry programme for Vienna Shorts 2022, freelancing across curation and writing, and in the past worked in broadcast and festival production, arts communications, and script reading. She sits on the Board of Trustees of Glasgow Artists’ Moving Image Studios.
Michał Matuszewski is a film curator, festival programmer, researcher, author and film essayist. He is a co-curator for the Polish Experimental Film Competition and International Competition at the Short Waves Film Festival and has curated a number of film events and retrospectives at Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, a leading art institution in Poland. He is a grantee of Culture and Animals Foundation and works on a visual research-based film project on animal gaze in film, as well as a member of the Essay Film Studio and Film School in Łódź. His most recent film essay project Re-membering Topsy is currently on show at the National Museum in Warsaw.
Awarded to the best feature film presented as part of BIEFF’s International Feature Film Competition, the award consists of post-production services in a total value of 20.000 euro, to be used for the production of the next project of the winning director.
